He gently lowered her to the ground and put a hand on her shoulder to make sure she was steady on her feet. He took in a deep breath. He trusted Abby and he would follow her. But, that didn’t take away the feeling of dread and worry that was threatening to suffocate him.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

ABBY

DAY SEVEN

ESCAPE

Abby winced. The pain in her head and side was throbbing and radiating. But, she had to stay calm. She had to act like she knew what she was doing so that Cain would keep calm. She knew he was on the edge, just the fact that he had lashed out at her proved that. She was shocked when she realized what he had done, but she wasn’t angry with him. Every pore of his body radiated that he was sorry, and his eyes reflected that. And a deep regret.

She made her way inside the cave. Once you got past the low entrance it opened up to about 15 feet high and 20 feet around. It would have to do for tonight. She didn’t want to walk around in the forest when it was dark. If something happened… Well, if she fell and broke a leg Cain could carry her, but if he fell?... No, it was just too much of a risk. She had to be smart. Even though all she wanted to do was keep going and put as much space between her and that place, she had to use caution. One wrong move and they could both be dead.

Cain helped her gather up piles of the dry pine needles and she made a soft place to lay down. Then he helped her drag some bushes and branches across the cave entrance. It would be fatal if they were discovered by Master. She hadn’t heard or seen anything, but she had no doubt that he would be hunting for them. He would want Cain back.

She carefully lowered herself down onto the pine needles and rested her back against the cave wall. She wished that they had food or water, but they couldn’t risk looking for either. She hoped that tomorrow they at least found some water, because they wouldn’t last long without it. She was surer than ever that Master had lied. This was not an island. She just hoped that wherever they were that they found a town soon. The pain in her side was getting worse, and the longer they were out here, the more chance they had of being captured.

Cain was standing near the entrance of the cave watching her and swaying from foot to foot. She noticed he did that when he was unsure and confused. Just like when he cocked his head, he was thinking hard and trying to work something out. His reaction about Master lying and speaking to the police gave her a clear warning. She would need to be very careful about how she handled things once they got to a town. She would also need to make sure he didn’t attack anyone.
